NEW YORK, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- A young Chinese percussionist presented a gesture-based electronic percussion performance employing machine learning technologies, the first endeavor of its kind, at a Carnegie Hall recital here on Friday evening.

In doing so, Zhong Shiqi's team combined high technology and traditional Chinese philosophy.

The show involved no physical instrument, whereas a percussion performance usually requires many instruments, Zhong told Xinhua.

The team had the idea in February and started to write codes and the program in addition to visual design, Zhong said.

Named "Up Kind as Water," a phrase taken from the Chinese classic Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu, the show described the virtue of willingness and capability to accept others just as water is able to embrace everything.

Zhong was born in 1995 in east China's Nanjing city, and graduated from the Yale School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music.
