TRIPOLI, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday said it has delivered emergency aid to the medical centers in the embattled Libyan capital Tripoli.

"Following the recent escalation of violence in and around Tripoli, WHO has delivered emergency medicines and supplies to support 11 public health care facilities there," WHO said in a tweet.

The delivery contained standard health kits as well as approximately 230,000 treatment courses and supplies to treat more than 25,000 trauma patients, it said.

Tripoli has been witnessing an armed conflict between the eastern-based army and the UN-backed government since early April over control of the city.

Thousands have been killed and injured in the fighting, and more than 120,000 civilians had to flee their homes.

As the country suffers from escalating violence, local hospitals and medical centers are struggling to provide proper medical care to their patients.
