COLOMBO, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Sri Lankan government said on Monday that it will soon adopt a National Climate Change Act to minimize the emission of green house gases resulted in the country becoming a victim of climate change.

Sri Lanka's Director General of the Climate Change Secretariat Dr. Sunimal Jayatunga said that all attempts will be made to pass the climate change act which had already been drafted.

Jayatunga said ideas and suggestions from the relevant state institutions would also be obtained and an authority to deal with the emission of green house gases and climate change would also be set up.

The Global Climate Risk Index 2019 in December listed Sri Lanka in the number two spot among countries most affected by extreme weather events in 2017.

The Global Climate Risk Index 2019 analyzes to what extent countries and regions have been affected by impacts of weather-related events such as storms, floods, heat waves etc. with the most recent data available for 2017.

Hundreds of people were killed and thousands affected by floods and landslides which hit several parts of Sri Lanka in 2017 and 2018.

Sri Lanka also faced severe drought in 2017 and 2018, severely affecting the island's agriculture sector.
