YANGON, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Two more fish processing plants in Myanmar have been permitted to export their products to the European Union (EU), bringing the total number of such plants allowed for export to EU to 23, the official Global New Light of Myanmar reported Monday.

The two plants - TT Cold Store Factory and A&N Foods (Myanmar) Co Ltd - were so allowed after they passed a screening.

However, the factories can only export fish caught in the wild.

Myanmar has not allowed export of farmed fish due to lack of guarantee on their being free from biochemical residuals.

To meet EU import standards, fishery products are to be produced by only those hatcheries that are compliant with Good Aquaculture Practices (GAP), the report said.

Myanmar exports fish, prawn and crab to about 40 countries and regions including EU, China, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Japan, Singapore and Thailand.

Myanmar has 480,000 acres (194,400 hectares) of fish and prawn breeding farms across the country, earning over 717 million U.S. dollars from fishery export in the last fiscal year 2017-18, the report added.
