SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- An Indian army trooper was killed and another wounded in exchange of fire with Pakistani troops on Line of Control (LoC) dividing Kashmir, officials said Tuesday.

The duo was hit Monday evening in Krishna Ghati sector of frontier Poonch district, about 185 km southwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Last evening Pakistani troops resorted to an unprovoked ceasefire violation in Krishna Ghati sector on LoC, resulting in the death of a soldier and wounding another," an Indian army official said.

Reports said following the attack Indian troops also retaliated to the firing from Pakistan and the exchange of fire between the two sides continued for some time.

Monday's attack is the third straight deadly ceasefire violation since Saturday.

Two troopers were killed in similar attacks in Sunderbani and Nowshera sectors of Rajouri district on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Officials said the troopers fell to sniper fire.

Pakistani officials said on Saturday ceasefire violations from India continued at LoC in Bagsar and Leepa sectors wounding five civilians including a young woman.

According to the officials, the Pakistan army effectively responded by targeting Indian posts.

Both New Delhi and Islamabad accused each other of resorting to unprovoked firings and violating ceasefire agreements. And both sides maintain that their troops give befitting reply.

The troops of India and Pakistan have intermittently exchanged fire on 720-km LoC and 198-km international border in Kashmir, despite an agreement in 2003 to observe a ceasefire.

LoC is a de facto border that divides Kashmir into India and Pakistan controlled parts.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
