At least six dead as storm slams Argentina's Bahia Blanca

BUENOS AIRES, March 7 (Xinhua) -- A powerful storm tore through Bahia Blanca, about 430 miles (692 km) southwest of Buenos Aires, on Friday, killing at least six people and forcing the evacuation of more than 1,000 residents, local officials said.

Authorities warned the death toll could rise as rescue crews assess the damage. The storm, which hit overnight and intensified in the morning, triggered severe flooding, prompting officials to shut down public activities and urge residents to stay indoors.

Four people died near the city's main square, another was killed on the outskirts, and a sixth in the nearby General Daniel Cerri district, where 800 people were evacuated. Another 200 residents were forced from their homes in Bahia Blanca.

Floodwaters swamped Dr. Jose Penna General Hospital, forcing staff to evacuate patients, including newborns from the neonatal unit.

Local media reported that rainfall within hours exceeded the city's typical monthly average. ■
